The latest info on lab powder dispensers
A powder dispenser drops a fixed volume of powder into every well, tube or vial in one motion. This guide covers the reference data you need to pick one: volume ranges, container formats, accuracy targets, static and moisture effects, and how the leading systems compare.

Match the powder to the dispensing method
Most dispensing failures are material failures, not machine failures. Find your powder’s behaviour first, then choose the mesh plate, hopper material and environment that suit it.
| Powder behaviour | Typical materials | What goes wrong | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-flowing, granular | Coarse salts, crystalline APIs, granulated media | Little: fills mesh cavities cleanly | Any volumetric dispenser; standard mesh plate |
| Cohesive, fine | Micronised APIs, milled powders below 20 µm | Bridging over the cavity, partial fills | Tap or vibrate the slider, larger cavity diameter, taller mesh plate |
| Static-prone | Fluorinated and hydrophobic powders, dry polymers | Clings to plastic, sprays on release | Metal or dissipative hopper, grounded frame, ionising bar, RH above 40% |
| Hygroscopic | CaCl₂, NaOH, KOH, many APIs | Mass gain during weighing, caking in the hopper | Dispense by volume not mass, dry cabinet below 30% RH, seal immediately |
| Segregating blends | Two-component mixes with different particle sizes | Composition drifts across the plate | Refill in small batches, avoid long hopper residence, verify by assay |
Container format to dispenser format
| Your container | Grid you need | Usual volume per well | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 96-well microplate | 96-well grid, 9 mm pitch | 5–50 µL | Shallow wells: check mesh plate clears the plate rim |
| 96-well deep-well plate | 96-well grid with converter | 50–500 µL | Most common high-throughput homogenisation format |
| 384-well plate | 384-well grid, 4.5 mm pitch | 2–15 µL | Static control matters most at this scale |
| 2 mL microvials | 45- or 48-position tube block | 50–1000 µL | Snap-cap and screw-cap blocks are different parts |
| Single vials or tubes off-format | Custom grid | Application specific | Send drawings or a sample container when requesting a quote |
The basics
What a powder dispenser is
A lab powder dispenser is a volumetric loading tool. A mesh plate holds one machined cavity per well; you fill the plate, scrape off the excess, then release the whole set into the container below in a single action. Because every cavity has the same volume, the dose is repeatable without weighing each well.
Manual systems are gravity-fed and mechanical: a slider or a flip drops the powder. Automated systems weigh a dose gravimetrically and dispense it head by head, which is slower per well but traceable to a balance reading. Both approaches are covered in the top 5 powder dispensers compared, and the underlying material physics is documented in the documentation and resources section.
Why labs move off manual weighing
- Weighing 96 wells by spatula takes 30–60 minutes; a volumetric plate takes about 30 seconds.
- Operator-to-operator spread disappears: the cavity, not the hand, sets the dose.
- Hygroscopic powders spend seconds in open air instead of minutes, so moisture pickup stops biasing the mass.
- Fewer open transfers means less cross-contamination between wells and less airborne fine powder.
How it works
Four steps to a filled plate
01
Pick the mesh plate
Cavity diameter and depth set the volume per well. Swap the plate to change the dose.
02
Fill and level
Pour powder across the plate and scrape the surplus back. Every cavity is now identically full.
03
Seat the container
Clamp the plate, tube block or vial rack in the frame so every opening lines up with a cavity.
04
Release
Pull the slider or flip the assembly. All wells receive their dose in one motion.
Formats
Standard dispenser formats
These are the grids labs ask for most often. Each one is a frame plus an interchangeable mesh plate, so one dispenser covers several volumes.
